ROYAL CHORAL SOCIETY: Hallelujah Chorus in Isolation #Messiah2020 #RoyalAlbertHome

At twelve noon, on this date, April 13, 1742, the world heard the first performance of ‘Messiah’ There has not been a year since then that George Frederick Handel’s ‘Messiah’ has not been performed in concert halls around the world. The first performance took place in a Dublin music hall.

Many audiences typically stand during the Hallelujah chorus. The reason for this has its origins in a story that King George II was so moved by the chorus during the London premiere that he rose to his feet. Because of protocol, the audience in attendance also stood and thus the tradition was born.
